Kids Professional Soccer Coaching: Introducing the Coaching Spectrum

Kids Professional Soccer: The Coaching Spectrum

Introducing the Soccer Coaching Spectrum

I’ve been involved in kids professional soccer coaching for more than 15 years now. I have been able to make some fantastic friends, found mentors (who became close friends). The journey has been incredible. I’ve met some wonderful people (including my wife) and remain as passionate as I was on day 1.  A few months ago, I sat down for coffee with my good friend and fellow coach, Joe Smith. Joe isn’t just any coach; he’s someone who has developed programs that have produced U.S. national team players across numerous age levels. He was also the head coach of the under-16s at Tottenham Hotspur. As we sipped on our espressos, Joe leaned in and said, “Have you ever thought about the idea of a coaching spectrum? A method that’s as dynamic and individualized as the kids we coach?”

That conversation was a catalyst. Joe’s idea of the “Coaching Spectrum” resonated deeply with me, and it led to the development of this revolutionary framework designed for kids professional soccer coaching. This approach acknowledges that no two children are the same and provides a roadmap for personalized, effective coaching. Today, I want to delve deeper into what the Coaching Spectrum is and how it can transform kids professional soccer coaching.

Unpacking the Soccer Coaching Spectrum

The Fluid Nature of the Spectrum in Soccer Coaching

In the ever-changing world of kids professional soccer coaching, it’s crucial to understand that the Coaching Spectrum is fluid. This reflects the dynamic behavior and environments young athletes experience. Creating an environment is our highest priority, we are products of it after all. While some kids need extra support, others benefit from additional challenges, and many fluctuate between these extremes, requiring constant observation.

Tailored Responses in Kids Professional Soccer Coaching

One of the unique attributes of the Coaching Spectrum is the ability to tailor coaching techniques according to individual needs. By implementing specific “Super Powers” and “Constraints,” training sessions can become more engaging and beneficial for young athletes at different skill levels.

The Table of Solutions: Super Powers and Constraints

To help you better understand the applications of the Coaching Spectrum, let’s delve into some specific solutions that can cater to the needs of individuals at varying levels of skill and experience.

Super Powers for Strugglers/Inexperienced Players

Super Power Consequence
Freeze Pinnie Players can carry a pinnie or two to tag opposition players on the ball. Tagged players must freeze for 5 seconds.
Tackles = Goals Every tackle is a goal. Making it easier to touch the ball or attempting a tackle also counts as a goal.
Restart Head start At their restart of play, they get 3 seconds of free play.
Goals = Triple Their goals are worth 3. How do they and their teammates utilize this advantage?
Instant Replay Players get 5 instant replay cards. Make a mistake? Miss a chance? Replay! When and how do they use them?
Can’t Touch This Players can’t be tackled. How do they and their teammates use this superpower?

Constraints for Flyers/Experienced Players

Constraint Consequence
1 Touch or 4 Touches Players can either play one touch or four, challenging their decision-making and ball retention skills.
Weight Lifter Players must carry two balls while playing, emphasizing skill over physicality.
Score in 4 Players have 4 seconds to score when on the ball. More than 4 equals a free kick or goal to the other team.
Goals = 1/2 Goals are only worth 1/2. Do they double their work or share the load with other players?
Long Range Legend Players can only score outside specified areas.
1 Touch Finish Players can only score with one touch, challenging them to create suitable situations for it.
